WHERE?: Walking distance from the PATH, at the Hudson School: 601 Park Avenue, Hoboken (at the corner of 6th Street and Park Avenue, enter on 6th Street).
Public transit between New York and New Jersey includes such options as PATH and NJ Transit trains, NJ Transit buses (which you can catch at the NY Port Authority station on 42nd Street), as well as the NY Waterway Ferry. All of those options will leave you at the Hoboken train station (note: if you take a NJ Transit bus from the Port Authority terminal, you can exit on 6th Street in Hoboken and walk west on 6th to Park Avenue).
Walking Directions from River Street, at the Hoboken Terminal/PATH station: Once outside, turn left on Newark Street and walk two blocks to Washington Street. Turn right on Washington and walk to 6th Street. Turn left and walk three blocks to Park Avenue - you will pass Bloomfield Street, then Garden, then Park. The Hudson School (where the club meets) is on 6th Street between Garden and Park, at the corner of Park.
Buses From New York City Port of Authority - 42nd Street: Lincoln Tunnel: Bus #126. George Washington Bridge: Bus #181.
Buses From Jersey City (available at Journal Square): Bus #68, 85, 87, or 89. Bus From Newarks Penn Station: Bus #67
Driving Directions to the Mile Square Toastmasters:
From the Route 3 or the NJ Turnpike to N. Hoboken: Without going into too much detail, you want to get on 495E heading to the Lincoln Tunnel, and follow the signs to Hoboken. You'll end up at 14th St.
From 280 to S. Hoboken: Take 280E until the "Last Exit Before Toll" which puts you on County Route 514? which will merge with 7 (see Map 1). You'll pass Fish House Road, then over a drawbridge over the Hackensack River. Then you'll hit a messy little traffic circle (you can't see the whole circle) where you want to dodge all the cars and veer to the left, then take an immediate right past the school bus depot. You're on Truck Route 1 & 9. Stay in the right lanes for the Holland Tunnel, through 2 quick lights, into an almost blind double merge, and you'll end up in the covered roadway.
From 78, 22, 1&9, and the NJ Turnpike to S. Hoboken: There are two basic options - taking the Pulaski Skyway approach (a.k.a. the 1&9 approach) or the Turnpike extension. Generally, we recommend the Skyway, but it depends almost entirely on traffic. Also, the Turnpike Extension costs 85 cents.
Click here for directions from the Pulaski Skyway and/or the New Jersey Turnpike Eastern Spur (meanwhile, here is a large map of the area).
Parking: There is a small lot behind the Hudson School itself - enter on 6th Street between the church at the corner of Garden and the school itself on the corner of Park. However, do not block the driveway (there is a sign warning this) - if you do, the pastor of the church next door will have you towed. If nothing is available there, you can try the nearby garage (info below) or you can try your luck on the street.
Parking in Hoboken is tough. However, we've got a little inside knowledge that can ease your burden:
- Arrive early: if you get to Hoboken before 7:00 PM (preferably before 6:00 PM), more spots are available. Many drivers begin leaving between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, and -- with a little perseverance -- you can find good spots on nearby side streets.
Try the nearby metered parking: metered spots fairly near the school on 6th Street (between Washington and Bloomfield) clear up at around 7:00 PM. And that's the best time to nab such a spot, because the two-hour parking restrictions only run until 9:00 PM. In such a case, the most you'll spend is two dollars (15 minutes per quarter).
- Beware of restricted parking: there are certain streets on which non-Hoboken residents are not permitted to park. However, those restrictions only pertain to ONE side of the street. They are identified by signs that have a dark green rectangle across the bottom. If you see such a sign -- and you don't have a Hoboken permit -- try the other side of the street. Or try a different street.
Note: the restricted side varies from street to street, and is waived entirely on certain streets. Further note: if you see a white sign with green letters that reads "Hoboken Residents Only -- All Others 4-hour limit", relax. You've got plenty of time, provided that you've arrived after 5:00 PM.
- Consider a parking garage: when your best efforts to park prove fruitless, we recommend the nearby parking garage at 371 4th Street (between Clinton and Grand). For a modest fee, you can be just blocks from the Hudson School, without worrying about your car's being ticketed or towed.
If you do arrive in Hoboken early, there's plenty to keep you occupied before the meeting. Hoboken is the NJ equivalent of Manhattan's Greenwich Village, replete with cozy shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars. Click here for a quick guide to the area.
